Oh man, you asked for it! It’s pretty long, but I tried (tried it bears repeating) to make it kind of flow in terms of how I see the relationship (Cas falls hard, Dean reciprocates but they’re both a bit emotionally stunted, Cas goes crazy with power which puts a damper on their quasi-relationship, they start to fix it, and then YAY THEY GET TOGETHER FOR REALS). I’m in no way a musical person though, so if I failed, I apologize. Also I’m explaining WHY because I have a lot of feelings right now.

1.) Coldplay - Fix You

Ok I think this one is pretty self explanatory. I can’t not imagine this as Cas in regards to Dean once he’s pulled him out of hell. Cas still believes in Heaven’s plan, but he wants to aid Dean and make him all better. I think Cas is pretty naive at this point, thinking he can ‘fix’ Dean, and that all Dean needs to do is trust Heaven and trust Cas.

2.) The Fray - You Found Me

I have a headcanon that when Castiel pulled Dean out of Hell, it actually took a while, and in the time that it took, they got to know each other. I believe there were feelings there, not all good, but all felt with a ferocious intensity. I also think that, sadly, Dean has little recollection of this time. He remembers it like a dream, very vague and mostly emotions mixed with blurry pictures.

But this is basically Dean and his thoughts as Castiel guides his soul back to his body. Don’t get used to his thoughts on things.

3.) The Red Jumpsuit Apparatus - Your Guardian Angel

I’m not actually very sure of how much this one suits their relationship, but I couldn’t pass it up. Again, from Cas’ perspective.

4.)The Fray - Look After You

Cas just wants Dean to like him omfg. In my headcanon, Castiel really does like Dean from the very beginning, from the moment he pulls him out of hell. He’s only a dick because Dean was an ass, and what hurts worse than your crush being bitchy at you? But anyhow, Cas, despite his abruptness, really just wants the best for Dean and wants to take care of him.

5.) Coldplay - Yellow

So I saw a Destiel comic set to this song, and wow it fit really well. Again, from Cas’ perspective, the time frame isn’t perfect but I thought it sounded better here.

6.)Kelly Clarkson - Dark Side

So this is (finally) from Dean’s perspective after he realizes he loves Cas, but hasn’t told him, mostly because he KNOWS Cas knows how broken he is, and doesn’t think he’s affection will be welcome. Really though, this song could also be seen from Cas’ perspective right around the time he starts working with Crowley.

7.)Lifehouse - Blind

I see this one coming from Cas’ perspective (holy shit AGAIN dammit Cas give Dean a turn to express his love for you). He’s totally gone as far as Dean’s concerned. This always puts me in mind of when Dean wants to give in to Michael. I see this as Cas being upset at both himself and Dean, sometime after all his anger has fizzled out. (Seriously Cas, smacking Dean around was a horrible fucking thing to do, you need to control yourself dude).

8.) Lifehouse - Everything

This is where Dean and Cas have a sort of heartbreak love confession thing. Mostly from Cas’ perspective. The time frame for this one is kind of shitty because I dunno exactly WHEN this would happen, but it’s totally before Swan Song. Alternatively, if you think my headcanon can go fuck itself, it’s just generally a pretty Destiel song.

9.) Mumford & Sons - Little Lion Man

I always flip flop between who’s perspective this would be from which means I dunno really WHEN it would be either. I mostly see it as Dean realizing Cas is pretty much SCREWED and feels like it’s all his fault.

10.) Colbie Callait - I Never Told You

Dean’s perspective after Cas goes into the lake and doesn’t come back out. He’s regretting all the shit he gave Cas, even if he still firmly believes that Cas fucked up royally, and he’s struggling to grasp the concept that Castiel might not come back this time.

11.)Stone Sour - Hesitate

After Cas takes on Sam’s hell trauma, but before purgatory, and definitely before the whole unveiling of the Impala scene. Cas knows he’s disappointed Dean, and he wants to fix things between them.

12.)Death Cab For Cutie - I Will Follow You Into The Dark

This is all Cas, basically reassuring Dean that he doesn’t regret his decision to follow him and help him kill Dick, because really, was he supposed to let Dean go alone? Hardly. He’s not the same angel he once was, but his adoration for Dean hasn’t changed a bit.

13.) Adele - Chasing Pavement

This is Dean sometime after they bust out of purgatory, trying to figure out if maybe now’s the time to make a move on Cas. He’s hesitant because it’s been a long time since they had their little tryst before Sam went to hell, and he still firmly believes that if his life isn’t fucked up, it’s ABOUT to be fucked up. He’s leaning more towards chancing it though, because this is Cas. He’s worth the risk.

14.)Hoobastank - The Reason

This starts before, during, and continues on after the purgatory arc. Cas isn’t as hopeful about his feelings being reciprocated as Dean is in the above song. He’s going to keep his feelings all to himself, but he’s going to continue trying to make up for all the bad decisions he made and all the grief he put Dean through.

15.) Incubus - Dig

This song just sums up Destiel to me. They’re both fucked up, had their lives ripped to shreds, and had it get worse while they tried putting the pieces back together, but they understand each other. They make each other better than they are alone.

16.) The Fray - Heartbeat

This doesn’t exactly DESCRIBE CASTIEL AND DEAN’S LOVE SO ACCURATELY OMFG, but I personally always think of them when this song comes on. Timewise, it’s once Dean musters up the confidence to tell Cas that he still loves him, and that maybe things aren’t perfect, but he never much cared for paradise. Also sex.

17.) Stone Sour - Say You’ll Haunt Me

Same timeline. SUPER INTENSE SOULMATE FEELS.

18.) Flyleaf - All Around Me

Okay, I didn’t realize this was a Christian rock song for a LONG TIME and I used think it was about sex. It’s just a really sexual sounding song??? Anyway I am bastardizing the ‘true meaning’ because I like my theory better.

This is Dean while Cas gives it to him up the butt, basically. LISTEN TO THE LYRICS. LISTEN BECAUSE YOU’LL NEVER GET THE IMAGERY OUT OF YOUR HEAD I SWEAR!

19.) Nine Inch Nails - Closer

Another sex song.

This time it’s Dean giving it to Cas up the butt. (I’m so fucking eloquent. Can’t no one even TOUCH my superior writing abilities!!!1!)

20.) Matt Nathanson - Faster

Ok, I know this is a bit of shocking change of pace from the last song, but bear with me. This one is more of flirty, cutesy schmoopsy song for them. Like, super playful sex. The all day kind. With a lunch break that includes more groping than strictly necessary.

21.) Boys Like Girls - Thunder

Ok this one isn’t sexy, but rather Dean reaffirming his feelings to Cas, maybe on the day they choose as their anniversary, maybe he’s trying to propose or something. I dunno, I see this as Dean making some grand gesture as proof of his love (which Cas thinks is redundant, because he knows Dean loves him). MAYBE WEDDING?

And thus ends our journey. I know it ends kind of weak, but I figure Cas and Dean had such a hell of a time in their beginning, they really deserve a break. I have a thing for relationships that, once established, remain pretty unshaken. I figure they’ll have bumps here and there, but one a whole I think they’ll be very committed, and very comfortable with each other.

Damn I spent too much time on this.
